A long sandy beach in front of a popular, sandy resort, Southport has a shallow gradient with large areas of sand exposed at low tide, the beach is completely covered to the sea wall at high tide. There is a promenade backing the beach and a pier to the north. A number of sewer overflows discharge into the River Ribble and its estuary to the north of Southport, there are also some just to the south that may affect bathing water quality.
